A REAL NANTUCKET WEDDING
Kevin proposed on Cisco Beach in October 2006 on a picture perfect fall day right after they had visited renowned Nantucket lightship basket designer Susan Chase Ottison and had worked with Susan on the design of Brooke’s first Nantucket basket purse. On the beach, Kevin told Brooke that she might want to re-think the name she had requested be scrimshawed on the inside cover of the basket as his prelude to his proposal. Although the couple have a home on Shelter Island, there was no question in their mind that Nantucket was the perfect place for them to get married.
Nantucket Historical Association’s Whaling Museum provided an elegant setting for the Rehearsal Dinner where the guests also enjoyed the breathtaking views of Nantucket Harbor and Town from the rooftop observation deck and toasts in the Great Hall. The Nantucket Catering Company served unique island canapés and tasty cocktails to the crowd as they enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the island’s rich history and re-connect with old friends. Wedding Day preparations for Brooke and her friends were orchestrated by Michael Hawkins of W. Michael Salon. He served as the “wedding swami” and was the calm amid the hustle and bustle in the family home that morning. Brooke and her father were then transported down Main Street in style by Highland Drivers in a vintage Austin Princess, arriving at St. Mary’s Church for the ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on June 16, 2007.
Andy from Sperry Tents had the tents up the day before the wedding, and the floral décor by Dawn Kelly of Soiree Floral was so spectacular as Brooke said, “it took my breath away when I entered the tent.” Jen Sheppard, Nantucket’s Placesetters maven, gave the couple terrific advice about which placesettings and linens would compliment their theme, and covered all the details down to the seat cushions and demitasse service. From Spanky’s Raw Bar in the sand to the braised short ribs and sea scallops by Chef W. Scott Osif, the menu was designed to feature the best of Nantucket’s bounty. Pam Goddard’s cakes provided a stunning finale to the meal, particularly the Island Groom’s cake surrounded by fresh blueberries meant to represent the ocean around Nantucket. As the cake was served, the guests were also treated to trays of dark chocolate Whale Truffles created by Sweet Inspirations Chocolates. Nantucket Event Music provided musicians for the church and a quartet for a “Gatsby Style” cocktail hour. The Sultans of Swing band at the reception was a huge hit and the dance floor was flooded with all of the guests from the moment they played their first song. The band was Kevin’s favorite, though, and he loved that he was able to jump on stage and sing a rendition of ‘Brick House’ with them. At the end of the evening, the couple exited The Galley amid a chorus of congratulations from friends and family and Cranberry Transportation Services chauffered the newlyweds from the reception to their suite at the Wauwinet Inn in a Mercedes Sedan. Claudia Kronenberg’s photographs of this special Nantucket wedding were aptly appreciated by the bride and groom and “truly captured the spirit of the day and our wedding.” View another Real Nantucket Wedding >
