A REAL NANTUCKET WEDDING
Erin and Paul, May 2008
Erin & Paul met while working together in investment banking in NY twelve years ago and began dating a year later. They managed to continue dating even when Paul moved to Australia and Erin remained in NY and then later moved to New Zealand. Eventually, they both relocated to Erin’s hometown, Washington, DC. Even while living overseas, they tried to make it to Nantucket at least once each summer to unwind and recharge. After a few years, they realized they actually preferred the shoulder seasons on Nantucket and began visiting in the spring and fall.
On Easter of 2007, while vacationing in Buenos Aires, Paul proposed to Erin. They immediately thought of a Nantucket wedding because no place else is equally special for both of them. Since Paul’s family all lives in Ireland, and Erin’s family is spread over the US, they decided Nantucket would be a perfect destination to bring their families and friends together. They settled on an early May wedding so that the island would not yet be crowded for the summer.
Despite some unseasonable weather, their wedding weekend far exceeded their expectations. From the Thursday night welcome party, thrown by several of Erin’s bridesmaids at The Boarding House, to the Sunday goodbye brunch at Topper’s, everyone had a fabulous time.
A family friend, whom Erin has known since she was one, Father Patrick Collins, officiated at St. Mary’s Church. Many of the 200 guests extended their stay and ended up turning the wedding into a weeklong vacation. Erin and Paul loved having everyone in one place for the week. Whether it was walking along Main Street, or stopping into one of their favorite restaurants, they were guaranteed to run into some of their guests, and the wedding ended up feeling more like a week-long party or family reunion.
Erin and Paul tried to bring a mixture of both Irish and American customs to their wedding, bringing to Nantucket Patricia Treacy, an Irish violinist to play at the rehearsal clambake at The Wauwinet and an American band, Party on the Moon, from Atlanta, to play at the reception at The White Elephant. The groom’s 90 year-old grandmother, who traveled from Ireland for the wedding, sang “Danny Boy” at the end of the night. There was not a dry eye in the house – including all the band members who had tears streaming down their faces behind her!
Erin and Paul feel as if they owe the success of the entire week to Aisling Glynn from . She truly was a miracle worker, with no request being turned down. She coordinated everything, which was not easy given that the guests were arriving from all over the world. Nantucket vendors provided the expertise to help Erin incorporate all of the details she wanted. Dawn Kelly of astounded everyone by incorporating the color theme of blue and brown down to every detail, from the chargers to the custom made linens and even the custom designed lamp shades built and upholstered by Dawn’s team. Jennifer Shepherd of worked closely with Dawn to provide the elegant tableware specifically chosen to complement the wedding theme. Even the smallest detail of crystal buckles on the cocktail hour arrangements were added. (Erin loves sparkly things and they were tastefully incorporated throughout the design of her big day.) Erin’s surprise for Paul was a large topiary of their dog, Finnegan, that Dawn created out of white blooms, complete with a custom embroidered dog collar and crystal paw prints. Jodi Levesque from recreated the flowers from Erin’s Oscar de la Renta dress out of sugar paste for the wedding cake.
Essential details such as the custom tent set-up by and professional drivers provided by ensured that the wedding day went smoothly. Andrea of and Mandy McLeave of worked together on Erin and her mother, as well as the entire bridal party, to style their hair and make-up to look not only radiant but photogenic as well. Lisa Frey of , provided the videography of the wedding, and Claudia Kronenberg, from , captured all of the beautiful moments and the essential story in pictures of Erin and Paul’s wedding on Nantucket.
